A Month of Misery is a modular horror adventure for Mörk Borg, presented as extracts from the journal of an heretical monk fleeing the Church of the Two-Headed Basilisks and witnessing a new Misery gripping the Dying World - eternal winter.

And from the Spears: a frost. Born from Bergen Chrypt and covering all.
- The Calendar of Nechrubel - The Nameless Scriptures, Psalm 2:3.

A Month of Misery will be released in parts a day at a time during December 2023, starting on December 1st and ending on December 24th. The price will increase with each release, going from £2.50 on the first day to a total of £14 on Christmas Eve. You only need to purchase this once: when you purchase this product you will get access to all existing releases, and will receive all future parts of A Month of Misery as they become available.

To see an example of this release format in its final form, check out my 2021 and 2022 advent calendars, Reivdene-Upon-The-Moss and BLACKOUT. Unlike those releases, A Month of Misery will be fully laid out and illustrated upon initial release.

Over the course of the  month you can expect the following:

  • New dungeons to explore
  • Cults, factions, and NPCs encountered by Kratar Makart during his adventures
  • New enemies and threats
  • New magic items
  • A new folk god in the style of the IKHON box set
  • In-world fiction
  • Much, much more

The Book

A Month of Misery is presented as an in-universe text, a curated selection of extracts from the journals of Kratar Makart, heretic monk of the Two-Headed Basilisks, annotated and published with the collaboration and cooperation of the Church. It is presented as a recovered historical document, complete with footnotes, historical context, and editorial input.

The first document, provided free of charge prior to December and available to download from the Demo section at the bottom of this page, presents the editor's introduction to the text as a free sample of things to come.

Using A Month of Misery

A Month of Misery is intended to be used in a number of ways. Some suggestions include:

  • Read the daily instalments as a "found footage" style piece of fiction set in the word of Mörk Borg.
  • Pull out the dungeons, creatures, and magic items and use them in your game without the wider context of the book.
  • Present the entire text, or parts of it, as an item your players can discover as part of their adventures.
  • Use it as a guide to help you build a campaign based in an earlier part of the history of Mörk Borg's setting, as the Dying World comes to terms with the discovery of the prophecies of Verhu.

Safety

A Month of Misery is a horror book and deals with some content that may be upsetting for some readers. As chapters are uploaded, I will update this section with relevant content warnings. The entire work contains themes of religious persecution and violence.

  • Part 4 contains themes of sex, sexual abuse, and implied sexual assault. Also contains themes of ritual infant genital mutilation. This content is contained in the struck out text on pages 15 and 16.
